Hazardous Waste Generator
Storage Requirements
Large Quantity Generators storing hazardous wastes on-site are required to have a Contingency Plan that must:
- Be designed to minimize impact to human health and the environmental from fire, explosion or release of hazardous waste;
- Describe actions generator’s personnel will take in event emergency;
- Describe coordination arrangements with local police and fire departments, hospitals, spill response contractors, state and local emergency response teams;
- List all emergency equipment generator has available and where it is kept, with a physical description and its capabilities;
- Include evacuation plan for the facility;
- Be revised immediately to reflect changes in regulations, wastes stored, Emergency Coordinators, facility equipment or design, or if the plan fails;
- Be implemented and followed in an emergency by the Emergency Coordinator, who must sound the alarm, notify authorities, assess risk to human health and the environment, take steps to prevent spread and / or recurrence of fires and explosions, monitor facility conditions, ensure cleanup of releases and equipment.
Copies of the Plan must be sent to all groups (police, fire, hospitals, etc.) with whom coordination arrangements have been made. If the Contingency Plan is implemented (in an emergency) a report must be filed within 15 days to the Regional Administrator. Reference: 40 CFR 265, Subpart D
