Large Quantity Generator Requirements
Definition: A Large Quantity Generator (SQG) generator more than 1000 kg. (2200 lbs., or about five 55-gallon drums) of hazardous waste in any one month.
Requirements: A Large Quantity Generator must:
- Obtain an EPA Identification Number;
- Determine whether his waste is hazardous (see “Hazardous Waste Identification” info sheet);
- Store his hazardous wastes in accordance with RCRA requirements (see “Hazardous Waste Storage Requirements” info sheet);
- Inspect hazardous wastes stored in tanks or containers weekly for leakage;
- Inspect the level of hazardous wastes stored in tanks daily;
- Inspect waste tank discharge control equipment and tank monitoring data daily;
- Mark waste containers and tanks with the words “Hazardous Waste” or other identification, and accumulation start date;
- Not mix incompatible wastes in a tank or container;
- Store ignitable wastes at least 50 feet from the nearest property line;
- Offer hazardous waste shipments only to transporters with EPA ID numbers;
- Ship hazardous wastes only to hazardous waste facilities with EPA ID numbers;
- Ship hazardous wastes with a manifest (see “Hazardous Waste Manifest Requirements”);
- Properly label and mark hazardous waste containers before shipping (see “Hazardous Waste Container Requirements” info sheet);
- Store hazardous wastes for no longer than 90 days;
- Maintain adequate aisle space where wastes are stored, for emergency access;
- Have a written Waste Analysis Plan if they treat hazardous wastes on site;
- Have a Contingency Plan, describing emergency procedures and equipment (see “Contingency Plan Requirements” info sheet);
- Have at least one employee (the “Emergency Coordinator”) present or on call at all times, responsible for coordinating emergency response;
- Comply with RCRA employee training requirements;
- Comply with RCRA Subpart CC container and tank air emissions regulations.
